A decade after ‘Voice’ star’s murder, N.J. lawmakers move to keep her memory alive
A Burlington County native who built a massive following on YouTube and became a finalist on NBC’s “The Voice” may soon be recognized with a statewide day of remembrance.
New Jersey lawmakers have proposed designating June 10 as “Christina Grimmie Day” to honor the late singer on the 10th anniversary of her death.
Grimmie, who was from Evesham, rose to fame in 2014 when she competed on NBC’s “The Voice” and finished in the top three.
She attended Marlton Middle School and Cherokee High School before being homeschooled to pursue her music career full time
On June 10, 2016, Grimmie was fatally shot at a meet-and-greet in Orlando, Florida, by a man police determined was likely a deranged fan.
In honor of the anniversary of her death, state Sens. Troy Singleton, D-Burlington, and Latham Tiver, R-Burlington, introduced the legislation that would mark June 10 as Christina Grimmie Day.
“As we approach the 10th anniversary of her murder, this resolution ensures New Jersey remembers not only Christina’s remarkable career, but also the importance of continuing the fight against gun violence and supporting victims and their loved ones,” Singleton said in a joint statement with Tiver on Facebook.
Grimmie gained internet popularity by sharing covers of pop songs on YouTube, where she had over a million subscribers. Her channel currently has over 3.8 million subscribers.
In 2013, she opened for Selena Gomez at the Prudential Center in Newark, earning the opening slot based solely on her YouTube success.
After her death, her family started the Christina Grimmie Foundation in April 2017 to support other families impacted by gun violence.
According to the foundation’s website, it has raised nearly $600,000 for about 300 families since 2017.
A weekend of festivities called Grimmie Fest will be held in her honor from June 5-7, including a benefit concert at Franklin Music Hall in Philadelphia.
The legislation is up for a vote before the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee.
