Conaway, Singleton Announce Transit Village Grant to Enhance Route 130 Corridor, Burlington City

(Burlington) – Assemblymen Herb Conaway, Jr., M.D. and Troy Singleton (both D-Burlington) on Wednesday announced that Burlington City is one of four cities chosen to receive grant funding for transit improvement projects, including those projects designated along the Route 130 corridor.

Fifteen municipalities sought grant funding for Transit Village zones. Transit Village grants totaling $1 million were awarded to Pleasantville (Atlantic County), Burlington City (Burlington County), Dunellen (Middlesex County), and Somerville (Somerset County).

“We have worked hard to raise awareness of the need for improvements along the Route 130 corridor,” Conaway said. “The hard work has paid off and Burlington City will receive much-needed funding to begin the projects that will fix roads, build housing and further enhance the city.”

“The funding will enable major improvement projects that are set to take place along Route 130 and at various sites in Burlington to move forward. This is exactly what we have been working toward,” Singleton said. “These projects will not only benefit the residents of Burlington City but also anyone who uses the city as a travel route to get to work or home.”

Under this program, municipalities that have transit facilities within their borders can seek to be designated as a Transit Village by developing plans for dense, mixed-use redevelopment that includes housing near their transit facility. There are 28 municipalities in the Transit Village program.

Additionally, at the time Municipal Aid applications were due, there were 27 municipalities in the Transit Village program, and all 27 submitted Municipal Aid grant applications.  Twenty-six were selected for grant awards totaling $7.1 million.  Participation in the Transit Village program earns municipalities an extra point when their Municipal Aid applications are considered.
