If you have old sports gear gathering dust, a special collection effort wants to give it new life for a good cause

SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — As kids grow out of sports equipment, so grows the clutter in garages, attics, sheds and basements. A local sports team and state senator are working together to collect those items and distribute them to kids who need them.

State Sen. Troy Singleton says the cost is sometimes just too tough to swing for some families, so they are collecting just about everything — from golf clubs to goalie gloves.

“We know one of the biggest barriers [to involvement in sports] is the price and cost of equipment,” said Singleton.

“And one of the things that we are trying to address here is that very point of redistributing equipment, ideally to expand access and equity within youth sports.”

It’s a simple goal here. Donate your gently used sports equipment so kids in need can give those bats and balls new life.

“Balls and cleats and shin guards and anything that kids have outgrown — goalie gloves — are important. We’re also looking for rackets — like, tennis rackets, and things like that. Any and every bit of sports equipment will go a long way.”

Singleton says you can drop off at any of several locations through June 12:
