New Jersey Democrats Race to Get Casino Expansion on 2016 Ballot

Democrats who control the New Jersey legislature are in talks to get a measure on the November 2016 ballot that would ask voters to allow casinos outside Atlantic City.

The move requires an amendment to the constitution, which limited gambling houses to the seaside resort at the state’s southern end nearly 40 years ago. State Senator Paul Sarlo, a Democrat from Wood-Ridge in Bergen County, said allowing gambling in other towns is crucial to reclaim tax revenue that has gone to New York and Pennsylvania.

New Jersey voter turnout plunges to new record low

TRENTON – Voter turnout in last month’s election in New Jersey sputtered to another record low.

Election results made official Tuesday showed voter turnout was just below 22 percent. The lowest voter turnout in New Jersey had been 25 percent for the October 2013 special election won by U.S. Sen. Cory Booker. The lowest turnout in a November general election had been 27 percent in 2011.
