Sen. Troy Singleton, Bordentown City Mayor Jen Sciortino, the Moore Family, friends and community members will gather for a ceremonial sign unveiling to officially denote the bridge over Crosswicks Creek on Route 295 North as the “Benjamin Moore and the 693rd Sapper Company Memorial Highway.”

The event is scheduled to take place Saturday, Aug. 2nd, beginning at noon at Bordentown Beach, located at the end of Park Street in Bordentown City.

The bridge was renamed in honor of lifelong Bordentown resident Benjamin Moore, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2011 while serving in the U.S. Army during Operation Enduring Freedom as part of legislation sponsored by Senator Troy Singleton and now-Congressman Herb Conaway. Gov. Phil Murphy signed that legislation in December 2024.

“Army Specialist Benjamin Moore was a beloved resident of Bordentown and devoted much of his time to his community as an EMT and firefighter prior to his military service. The renaming, and this special ceremony, honor both his sacrifice and his life,” said Singleton. “I thank the Moore family for their tireless dedication to this effort, forever preserving the memory of Benjamin within the community.”

Moore served as both a firefighter and as an emergency medical technician for Hope Hose Humane Company No. 1 of Bordentown City — where he was awarded the title of “Honorary Chief,” — Union Fire Company No. 1 of Crosswicks and DeCou Hose Company No. 1 of Hamilton Township, as well as roles within Westampton Township Emergency Services, Capital Health and Trenton Emergency Services.

A 2006 graduate of Bordentown Regional High School, Moore joined the U.S. Army in April 2009, training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri before being stationed in Fort Drum, New York.

While serving with the 693rd Sapper Company, 7th Engineer Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom, Spc. Moore was killed in action on Jan. 12, 2011 in Ghazni Province at the age of 23.

Moore was the recipient of numerous awards and decorations for his heroism, patriotism and service to the United States, including the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Badge, the Good Conduct Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization medal.

The Bordentown Elks Lodge will additionally hold an Inaugural Ride fundraiser to support Benjamin Moore Scholarships for graduating firefighters and EMTs from Burlington County Emergency Services Training Center. Admission is $30 per adult, $10 per child 10-18, free for children under 10 and Gold Star families. The donation will include lunch and drinks. Registration for that fundraiser will begin 10 a.m. at the Bordentown Elks Lodge, located at 11 Amboy Road, Bordentown.
