N.J. renters may soon get a bigger tax break. Here’s how.

The New Jersey Senate has approved a bill that would expand property tax relief for renters, as lawmakers try to ease the strain of rising housing costs across the state.

The legislation, S-1759, sponsored by Senate President Nick Scutari, D-Union, and Sen. Troy Singleton, D-Burlington, would raise the share of rent defined as “rent constituting property taxes” from 18% to 30% under the state’s Property Tax Deduction Act.

It would also raise an optional property tax credit from $50 to $250 for eligible taxpayers, including seniors and residents who are blind or disabled.
