TRENTON – To honor those who have died in active military service, Senate Military and Veterans Affairs Committee Chair Senator Troy Singleton will be attending a number of Memorial Day events in Burlington County on Sunday and Monday.

“As the grandson of a World War II veteran, it is imperative that we do not lose sight of Memorial Day’s true meaning,” said Senator Singleton. “For generations, American men and women have lost their lives on foreign and domestic battlefields to preserve the rights and freedoms that we enjoy today. While their ultimate sacrifice is never forgotten, Memorial Day weekend allows us the opportunity to honor their memory.”

The Senator is scheduled to attend the following Memorial Day events:

• The Delanco Annual Memorial Day Parade, in conjunction with the Township of Delanco’s Recreation Commission, will be held on Sunday, May 27, 2018 at 1:00 p.m.
• The Mount Holly Memorial Day Ceremony, with the Joint VFW Memorial Committee, will be held on Monday, May 28, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park.
• The Palmyra Memorial Day Service will take place on Monday, May 28, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the Palmyra War Memorial.
• The Beverly/Edgewater Park 99th Annual Memorial Day Parade, in correlation with the Beverly and Edgewater Park Memorial Day Parade Committee, will take place on Monday, May 28, 2018 at 1:00 p.m.

Senator Singleton noted that while these parades and services are fitting observances, we must also work to ensure that current veterans have the benefits, educational programs, employment opportunities, housing and food assistance they deserve. To that end, he has sought legislation that would: expand eligibility for veterans hiring preferences in the civil service; encourage institutions of higher education to expand their Troops to College initiatives; assist homeless veterans with housing, family law, income support or criminal defense; and amend eligibility for the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program by excluding a veteran’s basic housing allowance as income.

“While a public tribute warms the heart for a moment, we must delve deeper into our efforts to assist our current veterans with the readjustment process, and there are many ways we can demonstrate the sincere gratitude of a grateful nation for the men and women of our armed forces,” said Singleton. “All these initiatives are directed to assist the brave, patriotic service men and women in our military, both past and present.”
