Singleton Bill Aiming to Improve Pedestrian Safety in Historic Districts Clears Committee
TRENTON – To improve pedestrian safety, the Senate Transportation Committee advanced legislation sponsored by Senator Troy Singleton that would allow municipalities to lower speed limits to 15 miles per hour in historic districts.
The speed limit of 15 miles per hour would be lower than the 25 miles per hour standard currently allowable in any business or residential area under State law.
“Historic districts rely significantly on foot traffic from residents and tourists visiting local businesses and sites,” said Senator Singleton (D-Burlington). “Allowing municipalities to lower the speed limit will help ensure that drivers are more aware of their surroundings and pedestrians have peace of mind when walking around the incredible historic sites New Jersey has to offer.”
Communities designated as historic districts, such as Cape May or Lambertville, often attract significant foot traffic or were built before cars were used, creating narrow roads and walkways. The bill, S-4489, would ensure municipalities can guarantee pedestrians are protected more efficiently.
