TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee Chair Troy Singleton, which would require the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) to make information on homeless prevention programs and services available on its website, passed the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee today.

“Homelessness is a real problem in New Jersey affecting individuals and families in every part of the state. Over nine thousand people are homeless in this state, a number that has increased since 2017,” said Senator Singleton (D-Burlington). “The DCA has resources available to prevent families from becoming homeless and we need to make that information more easily accessible so people are aware of those resources online.”

The bill, S-3242, would require the information provided by the DCA to include a list by county of grant programs and homeless intervention programs that provide assistance services to homeless veterans, homeless persons, and persons at imminent risk of homelessness.

Specifically, the bill would require the information provided by DCA to also include homeless intervention programs, homeless services within other state departments and programs and supportive services available at all levels of government.

The bill was released from committee by a vote of 4-0, and next heads to the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee for further consideration.
