Plan is What Middle Class Homeowners Need
(TRENTON) -- Assembly Budget Committee member Troy Singleton (D-Burlington) issued a multimedia package Monday in which he discusses the Assembly Democratic plan for a 20 percent middle-class property tax relief credit and a 25 percent senior citizen property tax relief credit.
The plan would help 95 percent of New Jersey homeowners and provide a maximum property tax relief credit of $2,000, with the average family slated to receive $1,552.
The average senior or disabled homeowner would receive $1,939.
Tenants also would see their relief increase.
The plan would provide relief against property taxes that have soared a net 20 percent under Gov. Christie.

"This budget process has been clear about priorities. I think the Assembly Democrats have been focused on middle class taxpayers; focused on trying to drive relief back to them and put money back in their pockets.
"I believe the governor's plan, while well intended, doesn't do that -- doesn't accomplish that.
"I think Speaker Oliver, Majority Leader Greenwald and our Budget Chairman Vinnie Prieto have done an excellent job articulating the problem and advancing a real, meaningful solution.
"So my time on the Budget Committee, listening to folks, [when] everyone is crying out for more and more state resources, the most important thing we can do is drive property taxes back down and put money back in peoples' pockets through that vehicle.
"As I've gone around and talked to my fellow neighbors and talked to them about the crushing effect that property taxes have on their life, I hear over and over again that they need relief.
"And the Democratic plan that we've put forth does that. It talks about giving real relief to middle class families, and we want to make sure that folks are able to live and prosper in New Jersey.
"And the quickest and easiest way for us to do that is to deliver real and meaningful property tax relief back to them."
